Most insurance plans cover bariatric surgery. Before being enrolled in the Deaconess Surgical Weight loss Program, it might be helpful to find out if the center is in your provider network or if your insurance allows out-of-network services for surgical weight loss. Most insurance companies require that a patient be at least 75-100 pounds overweight to qualify for insurance coverage. In 2002 the IRS issued a ruling that obesity treatment can be claimed as a medical deduction. Our coordinator helps all patients through the insurance and finance process.
For more information about insurance coverage or deducting weight loss expenses, you can contact the Internal Revenue Service at www.irs.gov, the American Obesity Association at www.obesity.org, the Weight Control Information Network at www.niddk.nih.gov or www.obesityhelp.com for general information.
