The nationally recognized orthopedic surgeons of the Deaconess Joint Replacement Center offer the latest surgical techniques, the most advanced implant technology, as well as innovative multi-model pain management techniques. The minimally invasive surgery available through the center means a smaller incision, which can result in a shorter hospital stay, fewer complications and faster recovery.

Specialized Program

The Deaconess Joint Replacement Center is a specialized unit offering a comprehensive program for hip and knee replacements. Patients and their loved ones work with staff on the journey back to health and physical activity. Patients support each other in group physical and occupational therapy sessions, supported by their "coaches." They even share group meals. All rooms are private rooms equipped with sleeper sofas so that loved ones can stay with the patient. After surgery, patients dress in comfortable clothes instead of hospital gowns.

Program Process

Education Class
All patients attend a total joint education class about a week before surgery. During this class, a thorough orientation is provided. Family members are encouraged to attend. Patients are asked to identify a "coach" to help them take on their recovery.

Pre-admission Assessment
An individual assessment is completed for each patient to help evaluate the home situation, including necessary medical equipment. A check list helps the staff evaluate a patient's medical history and current health status. Patients bring the completed assessment with them to the education class.

Leaving the Hospital
Social workers and discharge planners work with each patient to determine the appropriate care needed following discharge. Many go home and return for physical therapy on an outpatient basis. Those confined to home may have physical therapy provided by a home health agency. The discharge planners help make those arrangements. Even those who live alone will find that joint replacement is a possibility for them with the help of the Deaconess team.
